The ES32 modules arrived today. Tried out with your code. Nice!
Unfortunately the packaging was rubbish and one of them has a broken corner on the OLED front glass. The display works but the top half only lights every other row of pixels.

Scrolling variables is no problem, as shown above.

You can combine text and numbers by following a scroll of static text with another scroll of a numeric value.

I don't know, It's not something I've tried, but have you enabled i2c, which I think Codebug tethering uses. You can do that from raspi-config or edit the blacklist.
